Where to Live in Birmingham

Birmingham City Centre

Birmingham City Centre is a very popular and exciting place to live, thriving with a great shopping centre, delicious places to eat, amazing street entertainment and beautiful architecture.

There are a large number of apartments to rent that may be suitable either for student couples, or 2 students sharing. It's also possible to find rooms in a development where you might be sharing with someone else such as a young business person.


Student Areas in the Birmingham Suburbs

  • Aston students searching for accommodation to suit lower budgets often share houses with other students in areas outside of the city centre.
  • In most circumstances, each student has their own bedroom, a communal living area, communal kitchen and shared shower or bathroom areas.
  • When travelling to and from the university, please be aware that rush hour travel can take a while.
  • Visit any properties you are interested in yourself, to get a feel for the different areas. This will help you to decide if the area is somewhere you can picture yourself being happy and comfortable.
  • Erdington, Selly Oak and Perry Barr are quite popular student areas; however do check out  Aston Student Homes as we advertise properties in many areas.

Housing for Student Families

  • There's plenty of housing available in Birmingham which is suitable for students with families.
  • You can search local newspapers such as the Birmingham mail on a Thursday for properties to let.


Schools for students' children:

  • If your child is aged 4 years or over on 1st September, they will be offered a free place in a state school.
  • Primary schools cater for children aged 4-11 and secondary schools cater for children aged 11-16. See

  • There are many takeaway places within walking distance of campus including: Caspian Pizza, Chicken Hut, John’s Fish Bar, Big Johns and many more.​

Entertainment close to campus

  • Bullring is only a 15 minute walk away, featuring a variety of different shops and restaurants.
  • There is also The Mailbox, Brindley Place and Broad Street which is home to the cinema and many night clubs. Other areas to visit may be Digbeth and The Arcadian.
  • If you fancy going down to the pub, there is B4 Bar, Gosta Green and Sacks of Potatoes on campus. There are also many pubs with delicious food within walking distance such as The Square Peg.
  • Star City is also close by, a 10 minute taxi ride away, with many restaurants, a cinema complex, bowling alley, and casino. Visit​
